Haavelmo var byråsjef i Handelsdepartementet fra 1947 til 1948 samt professor i sosialøkonomi og statistikk ved Universitetet i Oslo (1948-1979). Det var Haavelmos arbeider innen økonometri og matematisk økonomi som ga ham nobelprisen.
