Ordene utdanning and teknologi i termen utdanningsteknologi har generell betydning. Utdanningsteknologi er ikke begrenset til utdannelse av barn, og heller ikke til bruk av høyteknnologi. Det spesielle tilfellet av meningsfull bruk av høyteknologi for å fremme læring i klasserommet og høyere utdannelse er kjent som technology integration.
